The Berry Patch

Thursday we took out Jillian's car seat and Drew and I went to our best buddies' house and picked them up and headed out to pick some blueberries.

Peace! They are some funny. Owen and Emily started saying peace and Drew followed along.

Packed in the Mountaineer, movie on and ready for the ride.

Owen, Emily and Drew.

On the way Drew was hitting a ball on his sunglasses and of course broke them. I will see if I can pop the lens back in.

You tie your berry bucket around your waist, so you have both hand free for picking. Drew tolerated that for about five minutes.

Walking to the berry patch. Drew carrying his bucket and dragging his twine behind.

Drew did a good job picking blueberries. He picked the bluest ones because they are the sweetest.

He ate about half of the berries that he picked. He just couldn't resist.

Owen reaching high for a blueberry.

The kids were in charge of picking the bottom part of the blueberry bushes and Shannon and I the tops.

The boys picked for a while and then ended up running up and down the rows and playing with sticks. Once Drew was a row over from me and got scared and started crying, it was so heartbreaking. We had a quick reunion and then back to more fun.

Playing with a stick in the dirt, such a boy.

Shannon snacking on the blueberries too. We had to taste test the product.

Emily found some good ones deep in the bushes. Emily is such a sweet girl. Helped us keep the reigns on the boys and she was a great berry picker.

Best Buddies.

Owen and Drew were so cute. They held hands and had a conversation all the way back to the weighing station.

Drew petting a kitten. Such a cool place. There were some resident dogs, this kitten and a polka dot chicken. Picnic tables for lunching, a lawn mower pulled train and a play area.

Emily and Drew looking at the live working bees. They were excited when they found the queen.

Cooling down with some bomb pops.

Shannon kept calling this a particular type of hen, but I can't remember the name. So I call it the polka dot chicken. I tried to look it up on line. I couldn't find it but I did find this:

" Find out what color eggs the chickens lay. Chickens with white earlobes lay white eggs while chickens with red or brown earlobes lay brown eggs. Certain types of chickens like the Araucana or Americauan breeds lay blue or green eggs."

Am I the only one that has never noticed ears on a chicken, I will have to look closely at my picture of the polka dot chicken.

We had lunch and then the kids rode the tractor train. They were excited. That was what they wanted to do since we got there.

Owen holding his ears, this kid hates loud noises. I think he held them the whole trip.

Drew is all smiles.

Playing in the stinky hay.

Down the tube.

Me trying to get a best buddies picture.

Finally I bribed all the kids with rice krispie treats on the ride home if they stood by the tree for a nice picture. It turned out super cute.

More playing in the hay.

These pictures in the tube turned out pretty cool.
The kids were so good and I think they had a good time. I know that Shannon and I did.
All three kids fell asleep on the way home. Drew was so hot and sweaty, he fell asleep and woke up with funny car seat hair.

The goods - Drew and I picked 1.5 lbs of blueberries. Apparently we missed the mother load of berries by a couple of weeks, so next year we will have to try and time it a little better. We also wanted to pick blackberries there, but since there are so many pickers they have to limit blackberries to Tuesdays and Saturday. It was a very popular place.

It was definitely one of our best days out. I love spending time with the kids individually. I did miss Jillian today, but we are going to have our time in the morning. Plus she would have been a holy terror at the blueberry patch. Maybe in a year or two she can join us. Drew has requested that me make blueberry muffins and I think we will make blueberry pancakes this weekend.
